B2B Workforce- Insider's Perspective

Brad Elster, VP of Sales and Ray Kelly, VP, B2B Solution Center, shares each share their Point of View on SAP FKOM 2008.

SAP held its annual Field Kick-Off Meeting (FKOM) in Las Vegas, Nevada January 13th through the 16th. Brad Elster, VP of Sales, and Ray Kelly, VP, B2B Solution Center were among B2B Workforce's representatives at this invitation only event. As a Premier Partner to SAP, B2B was able to attend this year's "Take it Higher" themed meeting. While FKOM is primarily geared toward prepping the sales force and SAP Partners for the coming year, Brad and Ray were able to glean some inside information and advice for our B2B Consultants. See below for their thoughts on the health of the SAP marketplace, hot skill-sets for 2008, and more.

SAP FKOM 2008- Brad Elster, VP of Sales' Point of View

The SAP Marketplace

One of the strong messages at this year's SAP FKOM was that SAP software licensing revenues were up for the year. In 2007, SAP saw double-digit growth in licensing revenues, and that beat their expectations for the year. The good news for our B2B Consultants is that healthy license sales undoubtedly mean more new implementations. More implementations will in turn mean more B2B Workforce consulting opportunities for you, our B2B Consultants.

The only shadow cast on the market outlook for this year is the general economic downturn we are currently experiencing. This should in no way impact the number of new implementations we are expecting to see in 2008. Our clients are not purchasing the SAP software with the intention of letting it sit on a shelf, they fully intend to implement and utilize it.

Hot SAP Skill-Sets

The landscape of SAP skill-sets that are most in demand is ever-changing; however from the tone at FKOM and my contact with our clients, I foresee high demand for Netweaver, BW, Enterprise Portal, and HCM in the coming year. There is also likely to be a strong need for core R/3 skills like FI, MM and PP.

SAP FKOM 2008- Ray Kelly, VP, B2B Solution Center's Point of View

From the tone of FKOM which skill-sets do you see as being "HOT" over the next year?

First, please let me provide a little background and perspective. Skills and the demand for those skills are directly related to license Sales of the SAP Software, substantial technology changes (newer product versions and upgrades), and/or New Product Introductions (organic or by acquisitions).

The last 3 years for SAP have seen unprecedented growth in all 3 categories.

SAP license sales are higher than ever - with 2007 as another record year for license sales growth. As business process automation moves into the SOA era, SAP has introduced newer versions of their technology platform (Netweaver 2004/s/7.0/7.1) and ECC, all capable of running dual stack environments (ABAP and JAVA) which easily support new Product Introductions.

That said we see high demand in:

  1. Traditional ERP skills (FI/CO, SD, MM, PP and HCM). ECC experience is mandatory, so if you are behind in your training now is the time to "take the leap" and earn those extra dollars. Of those traditional ERP skills we see the highest demand for HCM skilled resources or consultants with upgrade experience (see #2 below).

Ask the SAP Career Expert

Q:How effective is MDM for clients & is that a good line of SAP career to get into right now?

JR: I'm glad you asked this question and I like how you are thinking about your career path. I hear from a lot of folks who are interested in chasing what's hot, but they never ask the all-important question: how effective is this supposedly "hot" product for companies?

After all, consulting opportunities almost always break down to a simple question of supply and demand, and if a product is not embraced by the SAP customer base, then the demand will be limited. And when I say "embraced by the SAP customer base," I'm not just talking about a handful of deep-pocketed flagship customers. That is not enough to fuel demand.

MDM, SAP's Master Data Management product, is an interesting case to consider. At first, the demand for MDM was more limited, but as the functionality in MDM continued to increase, the customer base has started to install MDM with greater frequency. With the current MDM release version 5.5, we are seeing a warmer customer reception than ever before. MDM ships with NetWeaver so that helps with product acceptance, though the last time I heard, you do have to pay an add-on fee to activate the MDM component.
