From the President's Desk
By Tim Shearer

The cover story, "The Evolution of ERP Consulting", written by Jon Reed is an excellent read for all of us in this industry. While the specific implications around how the changing employment landscape impacts us as Consultants, there are significantly broader implications of the change in the IT function on all technology professionals and firms that provide technology services.

The continuing specialization in skills, the expansion of complimentary skills, and the need for each of us to reinvent ourselves as consultants to remain relevant is just as applicable to Technology Service companies. At B2B, we continuously evaluate how we bring value to our clients and consultants and strive to grow the value add and move to different value propositions as markets change.

B2B was one of the first technology staffing firms to implement a formal solution architect program. This program is geared to help all of our clients develop and drive additional business to their respective companies. The B2B Solution Architect team is comprised of ERP consulting professionals averaging over 20 years in their respective ERP and functional domains. This deep knowledge and experience has been used by our clients to win work, prepare winning resumes, implement quality control programs to maximize the value of our contract consultants and perform project scoping exercises.

A couple of years ago, B2B realized that our specialty model, that highly leverages our sales people and recruiting managers, required that we have a better way to reach out to our consultants. We developed the B2B Talent Delivery Center to improve how we interact with each of you on an ongoing basis. The team has been instrumental in helping us offer our prior consultants the best jobs we have. This not only benefits each of our consultants, but also our clients benefit by having a tried and true resource and B2B benefits by being able to place total confidence in our consultants' ability.

B2B is currently working with our new parent company to utilize some web-based tools to further enhance our consultant experience. Through the tools we hope to be able to offer to our current and former consultants more job opportunities. The web tools will allow us to communicate with each of you more frequently and effectively. Keep your eyes open later this year as we determine how to roll this out.

We will be announcing in our next news letter an exciting new program with Carlson-Wagonlit travel to offer improved travel management services to our consultants that will also provide unique benefits to you. Stay tuned for these details.

As you can see, we here at B2B work hard to learn how to best bring value to our market place. We rely on you to help us by telling us what is valuable to you. Please let us know how we are doing in supporting your needs and what we can do to better your B2B staffing experience.

The Evolution of ERP Consulting: Lessons Learned from the Sapphire 2008 "Competing on Talent" Panel

By Jon Reed

Some ERP consultants prefer blue (SAP), some prefer red (Oracle). But there's one thing they all have in common: a desire to keep their skills marketable in a rapidly changing market. This raises an interesting question: are there "mega skills" that transcend individual applications? Are there skills that all ERP consultants can aspire to?

I recently got back from Sapphire 2008, SAP's largest yearly trade show. During the conference, I participated in a panel on enterprise skills trends called "Competing on Talent". While the focus was on SAP, the report we discussed during the panel had a much broader scope. In this feature, I'll review some of the key findings of the report, and I'll make a point to highlight some emerging skills that all ERP consultants can aspire to.

Jon Reed Interviews David Foote on SAP Skills Trends, Presented by B2B Workforce. "A Closer Look at the Sapphire '08 'Skills Shortage Controversy' and What Skills are Hot in SAP Today."

The so-called "SAP skills shortage" was one of the biggest topics of discussion at Sapphire again this year. David Foote of Foote Partners was at the center of this discussion, asking SAP executives about the extent of the skills shortage and how they plan to respond. Foote Partners conducts some of the most extensive skills-based SAP (and IT) salary surveys on the market today. In this podcast, Jon Reed gets David's views on the extent of the SAP skills gap, which skills are in demand (and which are not), the value of certification, and other SAP skills trends after Sapphire 2008.

Ask the SAP Career Expert

Q:What is your take on the SRM and CRM modules? How is the consulting market for these modules?

JR: This is an excellent question because it gets to the heart of an important topic: what is driving SAP consulting demand right now - a core ERP focus, or a "Business Suite" focus? As you probably know, SRM (Supplier Relationship Management) and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) are two of the four add-on products that comprise the current SAP Business Suite. The other two are PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and SCM (Supply Chain Management).

Sunscreen: How to Select, Apply, and Use It Correctly

When To Apply Sunscreen

  • Apply sunscreen approximately 30 minutes before being in the sun (for best results) so that it can be absorbed by the skin and less likely to wash off when you perspire.
  • Remember to reapply sunscreen after swimming or strenuous exercise.
  • Apply sunscreen often throughout the day if you work outdoors, and wear hats and protective clothing.

How To Apply Sunscreen

  • Shake well before use to mix particles that might be clumped up in the container. Consider using the new spray-on or stick types of sunscreen.
  • Be sure to apply enough sunscreen. As a rule of thumb, use an ounce (a handful) to cover your entire body.
  • Use on all parts of your skin exposed to the sun, including the ears, back, shoulders, and the back of the knees and legs.
  • Apply thickly and thoroughly.
  • Be careful when applying sunscreen around the eyes
