I am an IT consultant with 7 years experience with skill sets in J2EE,
Epiphany CRM, SAP technical (ABAP), SAP Netweaver Portal (Webdynpro for
Java), SAP CRM knowledge, and SOA architecture skills.
I am trying to understand how I should plan my career ahead five years
down the line in the SAP field. I am proficient in J2EE, average in SAP Technical and average in SAP Portals, and a beginner in SAP CRM with a few months experience.
JR: I'm always impressed when I hear from a consultant who is looking five years down the road in SAP. The problem, of course, is that no one can say with any certainty what SAP will be like five years down the road. SAP is closely tied to the fate of the overall economy, and economists disagree all the time on where the economy is headed. On top of that, we can't say for sure what kinds of new technologies will impact the SAP landscape.
With those disclaimers aside, I'll take a stab at a "five years ahead" look at SAP. I expect the current wave of upgrades to last the next few years or so. So, five years ahead, almost all SAP customers will be running on an advance flavor of NetWeaver with their core ERP system on top of it, version ERP 6.0 or higher.
